Giving Self Help Books a Try

of self help is that everyone has the capacity to improve his or her own life and needs simply to plug in to that power inside of themselves. The first awareness of the self-consciously driven power to help oneself appears in Self Help by Samuel Smiles, published in 1859. In a direct, take charge approach that would become synonymous with the term “self help” in later years, Smiles delivers the opening line of his book: “Heaven helps those that help themselves.” And it seems that, as they say, the rest is history, as self help books seem to be more popular than ever; books such as Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life and Dr. Phil’s line of books stay at the top of the bestsellers’ list often for years at a time. Clearly what people are seeking in these books they are finding, as self help books are an ever popular genre. Marketdata’s research shows that the self help market was worth $8.5 billion in 2003. The self help industry includes a variety of tools and materials including motivational speaking seminars, self help books, self help hypnosis CDs, computer programs, personal coaching, weight and stress management. The first in what has become a huge market of self help books was Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, published in 1936. Carnegie had failed at a series of careers until he wrote his book investigating the role of self-confidence in relationships and its correlation to success. People could relate to Carnegie’s honesty and realness, and bought 50 million copies. Self help books cover a wide spectrum of subjects- a 2008 search on Amazon.com for “self help books” yielded 170,557 results. The highest number of books in any category is for Religion and Spirituality, but there are self help books about romance, photography, cooking, parenting, and virtually any other area where you’d care to help yourself. A popular line of self help books is the “For Dummies” series. These seek to demystify a wide variety of topics by providing an informally written guide about anything from grammar (English Grammar for Dummies) to Catholicism (Catholicism for Dummies), and most any other subject you’d like to know more about. Self help is most definitely a trait reinforced in us from birth… how else would we learn to walk, to read, to make friends? It should come as no surprise that we would want to continue to help ourselves the older we get. And with access to things like self help books and self hypnosis CDs, it seems improbable that we’d ever have a good reason to stop helping ourselves.

The Art of Self Help: Hypnosis Cds

“I don’t think I can be hypnotized,” is a statement I often hear in my office as my client gently drifts off to sleep. As a Nationally Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, I have guided thousands of people over my twenty years of practice on a journey of self discovery and empowerment. My job, as a therapist, is to facilitate the individual to remove blocks and identify and reinforce goals while reminding them that everything they accomplish is their accomplishment and that, in fact, all hypnosis is self hypnosis. CDs that I’ve created and books that I’ve written–along with tons of research from other authorities–will testify to this.

Hypnosis is simply distraction of the conscious level of the mind. It is a form of relaxed concentration. The more relaxed you are, the more suggestible you become. Have you ever found yourself unconsciously whistling a tune you just heard on the radio? Or have you ever been around someone speaking negatively about something and soon found yourself thinking negative thoughts? It is said that enthusiasm is contagious….so is sadness, hope, despair and happiness.

Hypnosis is rooted in basic human biology. It is the natural counterpart to our “fight/flight” instinct, allowing us to be receptive rather than reactive to our environment and to receive input rather than remain in a constant state of output. Suggestibility allows us to “touch our environment.” Our mind is like a narrow one-lane bridge allowing traffic to travel in only one direction at a time. Suggestibility is the officer who halts the traffic of output and allows the flow of sounds, sights, smells, taste and touch to enter.

Hypnosis is the guardian at the gate of that bridge and allows only those thoughts, ideas, feelings and beliefs that are supportive to your conscious goals to enter. As a result, hypnosis and its counterpart, self hypnosis, become potent forces directing the subconscious mind towards the achievement of consciously chosen goals. If hypnosis is the traffic cop, self hypnosis, simply stated, is YOU, the officer directing traffic across the bridge connecting your inner and outer worlds.

In my practice, I have encountered numerous individuals with the desire to learn the practice of self help hypnosis. CDs, self help books, and other tools I’ve developed as a result include this five step program to tapping into inner potential through appropriate input. Simply stated, the five steps are: Preparation, Relaxation, Deepening, Suggestion and Termination. Preparation is creating a time, a place and perhaps even a ritual for relaxation.

Practicing self hypnosis at the same time each day is very beneficial, triggering the subconscious mind to reinforce suggestions, even if you’re not taking that time to relax for self hypnosis. Don’t worry, the same time does not mean 6 am every morning or 11 pm every night. That quickly leads to disappointment and a feeling of failure since life WILL get in the way and you won’t be able to make your “appointment with yourself.” Rather, choose a time in your routine, before you take your shower, during your lunch break, before you pick up the kids from school, or after the late show. Make self hypnosis part of your routine, not part of your schedule. Humans are not only suggestible, they are creatures of habit.

Spotlight on Bodytalk: Nyc

magined that when I moved to New York City to become a full time writer, I would instead become a practitioner of body talk. New York City is such a dynamic place, you never really know what you’re going to end up doing if you go there with flexible plans and an open mind. It took me a while to get used to the pace of such an intense city, and it was certainly not easy staying employed and making the money I needed to survive. Like most people who become waylaid into practicing energy healing, I stumbled upon bodytalk as someone seeking healing, not someone seeking a job. From the very first time I ever attended a bodytalk session, I came away knowing that this technique would soon be a big player in the healing arts. My first bodytalk experience came at an appropriate time for me–I was obviously going through some major transitions. Three, to be exact–my move from Salt Lake City to New York City, my separation from my boyfriend of eleven years, and my search for employment. From day one, I am convinced that it was through bodytalk that I was able to assert myself when needed, calm myself when needed, and prevent physical ailments that popped up as a result of emotional and mental stress. After my first session, I began to receive bodytalk regularly. Things began to change for the better more and more as I continued with my sessions, simply because I was becoming more aware of what my body and mind needed for optimal functioning. Feeling mentally and physically fit, I was more able to adjust to my new surroundings, adapting to, and eventually embracing, the pace of big city life. Because of bodytalk, New York City was becoming the place I had always hoped it would be. When I got a job writing a series of magazine articles on bodytalk, I felt the need to do a little bit of training. I so enjoyed and benefited from the classes, I decided to take it to the next level and become fully certified…I was enraptured. It has been six years since I moved here to NYC, and four and a half years since I became a certified bodytalk practitioner. Although I practice and give instruction in bodytalk full time, I am still pursuing my writing ambitions. I write in the evenings and on the weekends–I certainly have had no trouble with writer’s block since I’ve been living in New York, and especially since I acquired my knowledge of bodytalk. To date, I have published six articles on the bodytalk system, and I even maintain an energy healing Q&A column in a popular arts and entertainment circular.

How to Body Talk: Nyc Body Talk Methods

ard the buzz about body talk New York City. Body Talk does not employ diagnoses, prescription drugs, or invasive procedures. But it is still revered and practiced by many, from medical doctors trained in modern medicine to laypeople. It can be used independently or as part of your current healthcare program, as there are no contraindications to its use. It’s safe to use on yourself and others at home, schools, clinics, or anywhere. So what exactly does BodyTalk involve and how is it different from modern medicine? This article seeks to explain just that. The first step taught about body talk, New York City residents, listen up, is for the practitioner to establish where there is a break in the bodymind and where this communication needs to be reestablished. The practitioner asks a comprehensive list of questions in order to find out which organs, endocrines, or body parts need to be reconnected so that the body can function more smoothly and “fix”?what is broken. The answers come in the form of neuromuscular feedback that provides a concise “yes” or “no”? The next step taught at the center for body talk, NYC is for the patient or the practitioner to touch the area on the body that needs healing. The practitioner then taps the head (brain) to gently draw the brain’s attention to the work needing to be done to repair the bodymind. This tapping is based on an ancient Hatha Yoga technique that has been proven via the biofeedback apparatus. Activity in the part of the body that is being touched increases while the brain is gently tapped. The practitioner then taps the chest, which stores the changes in the heart’s energy complex. This set of simple techniques has for many years been the missing link in modern medicine. Much emphasis has been placed on the brokenness of the body and the employment of concrete solutions, which often included medication, surgical procedures, and other invasive techniques. But with its emphasis on self-healing, BodyTalk places emphasis on why the body has become sick or distressed and that, once the communications systems of the body are reestablished and the bodymind is synchronized, the body can heal itself. And better yet, the newly realigned body and mind function much more smoothly as a result of this new balance. Proven examples of this are in digestion and elimination, emotional and psychological disorders, posture and coordination, heightened immune system functioning, and many others. BodyTalk’s practice is centered around the fact that the body has the tools it needs to repair itself; it just needs to be realigned and refocused on holistic wellness and vitality.

Perhaps you’ve already heard about The BodyTalk System™ as an alternative, energy-oriented method to improving health on every level. If you’ve never heard of bodytalk or you want to learn more about what you already know, the benefits of experiencing and receiving training in the technique can be far reaching. Body talk is a newer form of holistic healthcare, and not the “quick fix” common to conventional medicine. For those interested in learning body talk, New York City is the best place to start here in the States. Manhattan’s BodyTalk Center is a growing community of experienced practitioners, budding students and satisfied clientele. If you have an opportunity to study body talk, NYC is the place to be.

Participants in the training modules of bodytalk (New York City residents as well as folks from out of town) are generally quite impressed with the amount of knowledge they gain from such practical content, and in a very short amount of time at that. Not to mention how much they thoroughly enjoy the courses….

BodyTalk Modules 1 & 2 are very comprehensive and detail the basics of the technique and how to use it on others.

Some of the topics covered in the first two modules include:

-Body talk theory, or determining the body’s needs by asking questions and listening to feedback

-Improving function and focus by balancing the brain’s cortices

-Restoring hydration

-The linking of the body’s parts, organs, systems

-Attending to emotional traumas, phobias, negative belief systems

-Addressing structural issues like posture

-Normalizing circulation

-Achieving better immune response

-Balancing the body’s energy systems

Many students continue their education and become a BodyTalk practitioner once they’ve learned the system. They can then take everything they’ve gained from their experience and training back to their families, their friends, and their communities. Bodytalk has piqued an interest such that it is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. But ultimately, it is its effectiveness that keeps affording the technique a new opportunity to grow and thrive.

The Art of Body Talk: New York

Body Talk may be old news to you, but if you are new to Body Talk, NYC is a great place to start experiencing the technique. There is a wealth of information on the science of bodytalk to be found on the Internet and in your local library, but ultimately the in-person experience is a must. If you live in the Manhattan area, or if you are traveling through, NYC is the location of the Body Talk Center, a healing arts facility with advanced practitioners and teachers of the art of bodytalk. New York, therefore, is an excellent place to immerse in the bodytalk healing art experience. Of course, New York is home to a great many healing arts, so you can easily expand your knowledge and benefit from a variety of healing sessions. Live the innate wisdom of your body.

Within your body there are streams of energy flowing through you, acting for your body somewhat like your computer’s operating system. The science of bodytalk focuses on keeping you in tune with your body’s energy flow and the excellent well being it can induce and restore. By focusing on these electro-magnetic flows of energy, Bodytalk, New York based or not, can support you in balancing your mental, emotional, and physical health. Sometimes the body is just run down, having used its reserves to overwork, overplay, under sleep or over stress, etc. Once run down it can be difficult for the system to remember what it was like to be in good operating shape, and that is where Body Talk can help, and the Body Talk Center is a gold mine of such support.

In essence Body Talk works by asking the body what it needs, listening for the response and then taking action to adjust the energy flows in your body to give your body what it needs. The technique includes verbal and hands on actions, many of which you can do at home, once you are properly trained in the bodytalk system. If you are excited to learn how to restore and maintain your well being with bodytalk, New York may very well be the place to go. However, Body Talk practitioners and teachers can now be found in many cities across the U.S, so check online for a local resource. Then again, New York can be a lot of fun, so to learn Body Talk, NYC and the Body Talk Center may be the place for you. Learn to get rid of those undesirable stuck patterns today, and live a happier, healthier tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow…

When you have aligned your energy flows, you are healthier and more able to handle the daily stresses of life. Regular exercise, a good, well-balanced and preferably organic diet, regular sleep, and daily periods of quiet reflection are essential tools for excellent well being. Knowing healing techniques you can use to help you maintain the well being fostered by sound living practices is another valuable tool and practice well worth having. At New York’s Body Talk Center, and many other such schools/training facilities and practitioners throughout NYC, and across America, professionals look forward to supporting you in your journey to sustainable balance and wellness.
